Our Story
Welcome!
Bluebird Moon is a small flower farm nestled in the breathtaking Catskill Mountains. We’re Sheena and Justin, and we personally handle every aspect of the farm, from tuber (or seed!) to bloom and beyond. We are often joined in the field by our young son who loves to help or play! Our roots run deep in these mountains; we were both born and raised here and returned a few years ago to be closer to family and back in the community we love.
How It Began:
Unlike those with lifelong garden experience, my journey into farming wasn’t a gradual one. The spark was immediate: I saw a small nursery and was captivated by the idea of waking up and working with flowers on my own land. Knowing absolutely nothing about flowers didn't stop me. I dove into research, fell head over heels for the ethereal 'Café au Lait' dahlia, and quickly started growing. The magic of seeing seeds and tubers I planted flourish immediately let me know I was on the right path.
Looking to gain hands-on training, I was lucky to get a job on a local vegetable farm. Although it wasn't flowers, the more than two years I spent working there provided me with an invaluable practical foundation-soil science, pest management, adapting to seasonal rhythms, just to name a few. I learned so many skills that were directly transferable to the cut flowers we grow today.
Over the next decade, that dedication became a continuous process of learning and gaining the knowledge required to nurture these flowers. We are still always discovering new lessons from our plants and the changing seasons. Just a few years ago, we channeled our experience into officially launching Bluebird Moon. We now pour our heart and knowledge into every bloom we grow.
Growing With Nature:
We believe in working with nature, not against it, ensuring the health of our plants and all the living things around us. That's why we practice sustainable growing methods, prioritizing soil health and beneficial insects to create a thriving ecosystem for our flowers. This approach guarantees not only the strength and vibrancy of our blooms but also the long-term health of the land we love.
What You’ll Find Here:
In the winter, we have our online sale where you can purchase high quality dahlia tubers, so you can grow these beauties in your own garden. These are the varieties we personally plant, nurture, dig, and store right here on the farm. When the growing season is in full swing, you can find our lush, fresh cut flowers-including dahlias and a hand-selected collection of other unique blooms-available at our local flower stand.
Thank you for supporting our dream and our family farm. We look forward to sharing the magic of flowers with you!
